Real Leadership
by Maddog on Jul.27, 2010, under Leadership
There is a difference between rank and leadership.
A true leader earns his or her rank.
One responsibility of the holder of rank is to his subordinates as well as his superiors.
While most holders of rank know about the responsibility to superiors, it seems that fewer know about responsibility to subordinates.
The best leader is the one who trains others to take his place, to multiply himself, so he can be many places at once, through delegation of authority. There is no better incentive, for people to do their best than the possibility that he may earn a promotion through his work and initiative.
This is why a true leader seeks to “lift up” the best of his subordinates.
It has been said that a person seldom if ever climbs in rank without taking others along with him.
Unfortunatly, there are many holders of rank who, are threatened by the talents of his subordinates.
This type is indicated by:
Blaming of subordinates for his own incompetence.
Seeking to guard his position from his more talented subordinates, by bad mouthing them to his superiors and others.
Always “finding a reason” to pass his subordinates over for promotions in rank, and always bringing people “from outside” to fill positions of rank under his chain of command, whenever those positions open up.
This is the sign of someone who has a rank higher than he should be holding.
