York city wants to abolish one way streets.

by Maddog on Jun.16, 2009, under News

Once upon a time York had all two way streets then as the city was growing some wise leaders decided to make the main streets in York, one way.

More details can be found at the york blog

Notice the reason for the change to one way: “Reduce complications at intersections, fewer turns are made and most of these can be made without crossing in front of traffic.” -”Double parked vehicles and other obstructions can be by-passed.” -”Slower moving traffic can be put into a lane of its own and by-passed by faster moving traffic, thus, the slowest vehicle no longer sets the pace.” -”Head-on collisions and side swiping type of accidents are eliminated.” -”Crossing at intersections is made less hazardous for pedestrians.” -”It is possible to get full efficiency from a progressive signal light system.”

Turner said that one-way streets would not be “a panacea for all of York’s traffic ills.” However, he and the planning commission asked that Mayor Bentzel and city council agree to a 90-day trial. Merchants generally opposed the idea, as did the chamber of commerce, Turner said in a recent interview. “The thing was, I was a manufacturer, so, therefore, I didn’t have to take any flak about it,” he said.”
Notice how the piece of crap chamber of commerce was opposed to one way streets from the begining.  In fact I was told the chamber of commerce was the group of scumbags who were respondsible for turning route 30 into a parking lot (they bribed leaders to put the traffic lights in so their members could make money on land speculation.) wiser leaders were pushing for a plan to make 30 a limited access freeway like 83 past York.  Saddly they lost that one.  BTW.. The leadership of the York Chamber of Commerce was in favor of Chronister’s $40,000 Hotel fiasco.

Now many of those same pieces of trash are pushing for Making Market Street two way

“Bill Schintz, owner of Schintz Studio in the 200 block of East Market, said it’s even longer than that. He’s been bugging the last several mayors, back to John Krout in the 1970s.

Making the street two-way could help with “the loop we’ve been fighting for 35 years since we’ve lived here,” Schintz said.

He watches drivers rev their engines and race up Market Street at high speeds and motorcycles do wheelies.

“They just enjoy showing off their cars. It’s a safety factor, though,” he said. “It happens during the day, too. It’s really not safe for anybody being on Market Street the way they drive.”

Wow, so because of some asshole drivers speeding you want to make the streets less safe for everyone. How about spending that money on speed limit enforcement. I would agree that speeding is the biggest single factor in accidents involving death or serious injuries. However someone is just as dead on a two way street as they are on a one way street. I know of plenty of people who died on a two way street. I can’t however, think of anyone who died in an accident on a one way street. Can you?

Any one who is tired of traffic congestion should boycott Schintz Studio. Shut that piece of crap down.

Also any honorable business owner should either quit the chamber of commerce or change the leadership.

You can bet your ass the they know it is going to increase traffic congestion and lead to more accidents. They don’t care about you. When things get worse they will just ask for more power and call for another tax increase to solve the problem that they created.

Back in Sheffield, England, it was proposed that we make a large portion of the streets one-way only. It didn’t slow traffic because they were made into single lane one-way streets. Now it is almost amusing to drive through the center of the city of Sheffield, and get lost amongst one way streets not allowing you to go where you need to, while other equally confused cars are behind and in front of you. Needless to say, it wasn’t planned out very well. =D

If it is planned out, one way streets will make traffic flow more efficiently and it will be safer.

Most of our medium to large cities in the USA have one way streets for that very reason.

The problem we have today is that recently (last 5 to ten years) many cities are abolishing one ways and making the streets two way.

The worst part about this is they know that it is going to cause more traffic problems and make the streets more dangerous for everyone involved so they can tax us for the “solution”.
