An experiment in funding

When I first started this blog it was because I have something to say. I want to report on the news from my point of view. Specifically focusing on the Capitol region of Pennsylvania. I even started putting videos on a youtube channel and started a podcast on this blog. I plan to put a podcast up at least once a week, most likely on the weekend.
Now I do go to a regular wage slave job. I have a rule about not writing or discussing my “job” or company on the internet. However, I will say this, it is a great company, and in this economy I am glad to be there. On the other hand it does cost me money to maintain my web server and this does take up a significant amount of my spare time. Not just writing articles but, research, recording, editing, etc.
I am not asking for a hand out. I’m writing this article to explain why you might start to see ads on my site. I heard some good things about adsense and decided to give it a try. I have no illusions about making any serious money from it. The main reason for my experiment with adsense is to see if it might start to offset some of my server costs. And I wouldn’t mind a little positive cash flow too.
My main concern was what kind of targeted ads would appear on my site. I pasted the code and reloaded my site and….. got a good laugh when all the “dog” and “puppy” ads showed up on my site.
Dog? Where did they get that from? It took me a few seconds to get it. Anyhow we’ll see what happens.
Eventually I plan to do some custom branding, shirts, mugs, etc. Right now I’m deciding between handling some or all of the operation myself, or totally outsourcing my branding merchandise i. e. Cafepress or similar business. Unfortunately I’ve heard enough negative feedback about Cafepress to pretty much rule that route out.
